Easy Southern Peach Cobbler

By April 3, 2018 2 Comments

This classic Southern peach cobbler is everything summer should taste like — sweet, syrupy peaches baked into a golden cobbler crust and topped with vanilla ice cream. An easy recipe you’ll make again and again.

With just a few ingredients and 4 steps, this cobbler will be your easiest dessert ever to make.

There are a lot of desserts that I love, but this one is truly one of my favorites. Peach Cobbler especially goes well with Sunday Dinner. Maybe it’s just another one of those Southern Things or the memories I have of my Grandmother’s Sunday fruit cobblers. She served cobbler every Sunday. A bowl of warm peach cobbler after a Sunday Dinner is comfort food at its best. In fact, just thinking about it makes me feel one of those Sunday afternoon naps coming on

It’s sooooo delicious!

🍑 Old-Fashioned Peach Cobbler with a Magic Rising Crust

There’s something downright miraculous about this peach cobbler. It practically makes its own crust—no pie dough, no fuss. Just a bubbling pan of golden, buttery goodness that rises up right around those juicy peaches like it was heaven-sent.

The best part? You don’t have to wait on peach season. This recipe works beautifully with canned peaches, frozen peaches, or fresh ones when you can get your hands on ‘em. It’s the kind of dessert you can make year-round—whether you’re feeding company, making Sunday supper sweet, or just need a little comfort in a bowl.

This Southern peach cobbler makes its own crust and tastes like summer in a bowl—no pie crust needed! 🍑 Just pour, bake, and serve with ice cream. Year-round comfort made easy.

Why You’ll Love This Peach Cobbler

  • It makes its own crust. That magical batter rises right up through the sweet peach juice to create a golden, crisp-edged, buttery top.
  • You can make it all year. Use canned peaches when fresh aren’t in season, or frozen when you’re in a pinch.
  • It’s easy. One mixing bowl, one baking dish, no rolling pins or fancy gadgets required.
  • Southern comfort in every bite. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you’ll see why this is a go-to Southern dessert.

What You’ll Need to make this Easy Southern Peach Cobbler.

(Be sure to see the full printable recipe below this post.)

  • Self-rising flour
  • White granulated sugar
  • Whole milk
  • Salted butter
  • Canned peaches in syrup (or fresh or frozen—see note below!)
  • Cinnamon
  • Vanilla ice cream, optional of course but highly recommend

How to make Easy Southern Peach Cobbler

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Melt butter in 13 x 9-inch baking dish or a 10 inch round iron skillet.
  3. Combine 1 cup of flour, 1 ¼ cup sugar; slowly whisk in 1 cup of milk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour batter over melted butter. (DO NOT STIR).
  4. Mix ½ cup water and the remaining 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar with the canned peaches and syrup/ juice from the canned peaches. Place peaches and juice over the batter. Sprinkle ¼ cinnamon over top of peaches, if desired. (DO NOT STIR). The batter will rise to the top.
  5. Bake in preheated oven for about 35 to 40 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned and cobbler is hot and bubbly.

🍑 Fresh Peach Option

If you’re lucky enough to have fresh peaches on hand, here’s how to use them:

In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups of sliced fresh peaches with 1 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and ¾ cup water. Bring it all to a boil, then let it cool slightly. Spoon the peaches—juice and all—over the batter in your dish just like you would with canned peaches. Don’t stir!

Another thing I like about this recipe is that most of the time I have the ingredients on hand, and I don’t have to make a quick run to the store. You can  easily substitute the peach slices for other fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, apples or cherries.

The crust will rise beautifully to the top!! This was the first time that I made this cobbler in an iron skillet and it turn out better than ever. So I defiantly recommend using an iron skillet.

Top it with a scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream!

This Southern peach cobbler makes its own crust and tastes like summer in a bowl—no pie crust needed! 🍑 Just pour, bake, and serve with ice cream. Year-round comfort made easy.

How to Store Peach Cobbler

Refrigerate: Store any leftovers in an airtight container or cover the baking dish tightly with foil. It will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can reheat individual servings in the microwave or pop the whole dish back in a low oven to warm through.

Freeze: This cobbler freezes surprisingly well. Let it cool completely, then wrap tightly in foil and freeze for up to 2 months. To serve, thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven until bubbly and warm.

  • Cherlon says:

What is the recipe to follow if using frozen peaches?

    • aletiadupree says:

Hi Cherlon! Here’s the recipe for the frozen peaches to use in this cobbler:
1 (16-ounce) bag of sliced frozen peaches
      1cup of water
      3/4 cup white granulated sugar
      2 teaspoons of cornstarch
Place the peaches and water in a medium size saucepan. Mix the sugar and cornstarch together and add to the peaches and water. Mix well. Cook over medium heat until peaches are tender and the syrup has slightly thicken. Just follow the directions for the cobbler . You will use all the juice/syrup from the peaches for the cobbler.🍑
