What to Do in Memphis: The Best Food, Music, and Late-Night Fun on Beale Street

Beale Street After Dark

If Graceland is reverence,

Beale Street is revival.

After a plate of dry-rub ribs so tender they practically melted, and a bowl of Southern-style potato salad worth writing home about, the night unfolded into pure Memphis soul.

Music poured from inside the restaurants, clubs, and every doorway, filling Beale Street with rhythm and soul.

Couples danced.

Locals and visitors mingled like they had known each other forever.

We wandered, laughed, listened, and ended the night with warm cookies and hot chocolate at two in the morning. Only in Memphis does midnight taste like music and sugar.

Stepping back into the cool Memphis night, Marc Cohn’s words drifted through my mind.

“Touched down in the land of the Delta blues.”

That was exactly how it felt.

I had walked through history.

I had stood in Graceland, where the King still lingers.

I had breathed in the blues.

And for one magical weekend, Memphis wrapped itself around me like a story waiting to be told.

Memphis does not leave you.

It lingers.

Where to Eat and What to Do on Beale Street

If you are planning a trip to Memphis, do yourself a favor and spend an evening on historic Beale Street. The neon lights glow, guitars spill out of every doorway, and the whole strip feels like one long celebration of Southern music and soul.

And let me tell you, you can dance the blues away on Beale Street, blue suede shoes and all, straight through to three and even four o’clock in the morning. Most live music spots stay open late, so the night keeps going.

Here are the places I loved and the highlights you will not want to miss.

Dinner and Live Music

Jerry Lee Lewis’ Café and Honky Tonk, 159 Beale Street

Dinner here was every bit as memorable as the music. They are famous for their dry ribs, and it’s easy to understand why. So tender they barely cling to the bone. The seasoning is cooked right into the meat, which means they do not even need sauce. The band was fantastic and the atmosphere was pure Memphis, lively and full of fun.

Soulful blues filled the room, Memphis at its very best.

Inside the restaurant, a soulful older gentleman sang with such passion you would swear he was somebody famous. Phones were raised all around the room, and I filmed him too, just in case.

Silky O’Sullivan’s, 183 Beale Street

Live music sets the tone at Silky O’Sullivan’s, creating a fun, energetic atmosphere where Irish pub culture meets Memphis soul. And for beer lovers, they pour a draft Guinness as smooth as anything you would find in a pub in Ireland.

A standout performance of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed “ brought the room to a hush, the kind of moment Beale Street does best.

Sweet Treats and Late-Night Snacks

Beale Street Sugar Shack

As temperatures began to drop and Christmas lights lined Beale Street, a sign advertising hot chocolate caught our attention. We stopped in for a cup that was rich, warm, and absolutely delicious. They also make homemade fudge, though it was sold out when we arrived, which all but guarantees a return visit. It’s a cozy and convenient stop while exploring Beale Street during the holiday season.

Insomnia Cookies

Warm, gooey cookies in the wee hours of the morning? Yes, please. We tried a variety of delicious flavors, including their famous peanut butter chip cookie. The cookies were warm, soft, and completely irresistible. And if a cookie craving hits after hours, Insomnia Cookies has you covered. They’re open until 3 a.m., making it an easy late-night stop on Beale Street. They were so good, we even talked about going back for more. It was the perfect ending to a magical night, with Christmas lights twinkling and the energy of the city still humming all around.

Plans for My Next Memphis Trip

Memphis stays with you, which is why I am already planning my next visit. Here are the places I am excited to explore next time.

Mississippi Riverboat Dinner Cruise

I want to see Memphis from the water, especially at sunset. The riverboat cruise offers dinner, live music and a beautiful view of the city lights gliding along the Mississippi.

Central BBQ

Central BBQ is one of the most recommended spots in Memphis. Their slow-smoked ribs and famous dry rub have a loyal following, and I cannot wait to try it for myself.

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

Spicy, crispy and perfectly Southern, Gus’s is known for fried chicken that people happily stand in line for. It is at the top of my must-try list.

The Arcade Restaurant

The oldest restaurant in Memphis and a favorite of Elvis Presley. Known for its retro diner feel and classic Southern breakfasts, this is one spot I want to take my time and enjoy.

Gladys’s Diner at Graceland

Named after Elvis’s mother, Gladys’s Diner serves homestyle comfort food in a nostalgic setting. Simple Southern plates that feel like a piece of Elvis history.

Terrace at The River Inn

An elegant riverfront spot with beautiful Mississippi River views. Perfect for brunch or a quiet dinner with small plates and a relaxing atmosphere.

Mahogany River Terrace

Another riverfront favorite known for its warm, upscale feel and gorgeous sunset views. Ideal for an evening meal and a little Memphis magic.

Where to Stay in Memphis

Hilton Garden Inn Memphis Downtown

My Recommendation

If you’re planning a trip to Memphis, let me save you some time: this is where you want to stay.

Located just steps from Beale Street in the heart of downtown, the hotel offers an ideal blend of convenience and comfort. The surrounding area is well lit and feels safe at all hours, whether heading out for dinner or returning late in the evening. Parking is simple and convenient, making it an easy home base for exploring the city.

What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the people.

From the moment guests arrive, the staff creates a welcoming, almost family-like atmosphere. Stephanie, the manager, embodies true Southern hospitality with her warmth, graciousness, and thoughtful attention. Her local recommendations and steady presence throughout the stay set the tone, and that same spirit of kindness is reflected across the entire team.

The rooms are spotless, quiet, and comfortable, offering an inviting retreat after a lively night on Beale Street.

The Restaurant

The hotel restaurant is a highlight in its own right. A late arrival on the first evening was met with an exceptional dinner, beautifully prepared and served with true Southern hospitality. Breakfast the following morning continued the experience, but the true standout was the shrimp and grits.

Silky, creamy, and perfectly seasoned, it’s the kind of dish that lingers in memory and one I would happily order again. It alone is worth a return trip to Memphis.

On weekends, the restaurant offers a lively brunch with live blues and soul music drifting through the dining room, a fitting reminder that Memphis music is never far away.

With its warm hospitality, exceptional food, and unbeatable location, this hotel delivers an experience that feels both polished and welcoming, an easy recommendation for anyone visiting Memphis.

Other Hotels to Consider

The Guest House at Graceland

Beautiful, elegant and within steps of Graceland. Perfect if you want the full Elvis immersion experience.

The Peabody Hotel

Iconic and historic. The famous Peabody Ducks, the grand lobby and the beautiful holiday decorations make this a must see. Minutes from Beale Street and located in a safe, well lit area.

Final Word

All three hotels have their charms, but Hilton Garden Inn Memphis Downtown is where I will be staying again. The location, hospitality, and unforgettable food made it feel like home.
