Description

Warm, rich, and comforting, this old-fashioned Southern chocolate gravy is a beloved tradition. Poured over fluffy biscuits, it’s a memory-making recipe that’s easy, fun, and irresistibly chocolatey.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½  cups sugar
  • 4 ½ Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white Karo syrup

Instructions

  1. Whisk sugar, cocoa, and flour together in a bowl. Add milk and whisk smooth.
  2. Pour into a saucepan; cook over medium-high heat 8 to 10 minutes until bubbly and thickened, ( and coats the back of the spoon. This is a great old- fashioned way to tell if it’s done.) whisking constantly.
  3. Remove from heat; stir in butter, vanilla, and Karo syrup.
  4. Serve hot over biscuits.

Notes

  • Hershey’s cocoa gives it that nostalgic, old-fashioned flavor.
  • Add espresso powder for a coffee-kissed variation.
  • Perfect as a dip or drizzle for entertaining.
