These Southern Cheese Wafers are the ultimate easy twist on traditional cheese straws—crisp, buttery, and packed with sharp cheddar, pecans, and a hint of cayenne. Perfect for showers, tailgates, parties, or simply when you need a true taste of the South.
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (sifted and then measured
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 ¼ cups Rice Krispies cereal
- ⅓ cup finely chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and cheese until smooth.
- Stir in flour, cayenne pepper, and salt until a dough forms.
- Gently fold in Rice Krispies and pecans (if using).
- Roll dough into 1-inch balls and flatten slightly with a fork.
- Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until golden at the edges.
Let cool completely before serving or freezing.
Optional Notes:
- You can also add a sprinkle of paprika on top before baking for a pretty color!
